چکیده
This study reveals on fatwas concerning cigarettes in the Archipelago 19th century. The primary source is an Arabic manuscript from Kuningan, West Java, digitized by DREAMSEA, entitled “Bāb fī Bayān Ḥukm Shurb al-Dukhān”. It does not only use arguments sharia, interpretation of ulama, and health reasons but also refers to myths conspiracies. finds that this mentions existence ḥaram (prohibited) makrūh (not legally forbidden discouraged) referring two Egyptian ulama 17th Through analyzing fiqh social history, philological discloses connection between its author with Egyptian’s networks as a new center for ideas Islamic civilization aside Haramayn. Hence, openly consider many aspects sharia responding such tradition (cigarettes) Muslim community. different similar manuscripts discussing kind fatwa century which judge haram so it considered politically form critique against colonial’ tobacco business policies.
